BMW discontinues base version of XM and bets on more powerful models

BMW introduces updated XM for 2026

BMW announced the updated XM ahead of its official premiere at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The new model features a simplified lineup and also includes minor updates.

Whereas the XM was previously offered in two variants — base and Label — the company has now decided to keep only the powerful version. This is not surprising, given that last year only 1,974 such crossovers were sold in the USA, which is 14.7% less than in 2023.

Technical features

All models for the American market will receive a hybrid powertrain: a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, a 19.2 kWh battery, and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. Thanks to this, the XM Label develops 738 hp and 1000 Nm of torque, accelerating to 96 km/h in 3.6 seconds. The top speed is up to 282 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.

Updates and innovations

Among the changes is improved charging: the speed has increased from 7.4 kW to 11 kW. A new light signal animation has also been added, which looks particularly impressive in the dark. A new body shade is available — Frozen Tanzanite Blue, as well as 23-inch M wheels in Jet Black.

Three new upholstery color schemes have been added to the interior, and models with individual leather interiors have received additional comfort pillows for the rear seats.

Price and production

Production of the updated XM will begin in August in South Carolina. The price is expected to increase significantly due to the discontinuation of the base version — possibly up to $190,000.

To mark the presentation, BMW M collaborated with British DJ Carl Cox, who created a special audio track using sounds from the car — from signals to the roar of the engine.

The updated XM Label continues BMW’s line of high-performance hybrids, demonstrating that the company is betting on powerful yet technologically advanced models. At the same time, the decision to remove the base variant may indicate a shift in strategy towards more exclusive offerings.
