BMW X2 gets a new face in the Neue Klasse style
BMW continues its massive design update, and the next model to receive the Neue Klasse family features is the X2 crossover. Fresh spy photos show a camouflaged car preparing for a planned refresh. This facelift is meant to bring the X2 closer to the older iX3 and X5 models.
Exterior changes: new face and rear end
The biggest changes will occur at the front. Although the camouflage hides most of the details, it is clear that BMW is installing a new front end inspired by the Neue Klasse. Expect slimmer headlights with new daytime running light signatures and a revised grille shape in a retro style. The side panels will remain almost unchanged, but the rear will get updated lights with new graphic elements. This will help distinguish the updated version from the current one without drastically altering the familiar coupe-like silhouette.
Engines: gasoline and electric
One detail reveals what is hiding under the prototype’s camouflage. Unlike BMW’s electric models, this prototype has a functional lower air intake under the grille, confirming the presence of an internal combustion engine. Another prototype spotted on the road has four M Performance exhaust pipes, pointing to an updated X2 M35i version.
The electric iX2 version will also not be left without updates. It will receive the same exterior redesign but with a smoother, almost fully closed front end typical of BMW EVs. Without a gasoline engine, it does not need the same air intakes.
Interior and Panoramic iDrive technology
Inside, the updates will be more radical. BMW will install the new Panoramic iDrive system, which is gradually appearing in other models. This means replacing the traditional instrument cluster with a digital display that stretches from pillar to pillar at the bottom of the windshield, as well as a floating infotainment tablet on the center console.
Expected timeline and technical specifications
Do not expect major mechanical changes when the updated model is unveiled, likely this fall. However, engines and electric motors may receive a slight power boost, and the range of electric versions could increase thanks to new battery chemistries. The current X2 already offers turbocharged four-cylinder engines in xDrive28i and M35i versions, while buyers outside the US can choose between the electric iX2 eDrive20 and the dual-motor xDrive30.
The X2 update is a logical step in BMW’s strategy to unify the design across its lineup. Despite some critics considering the current X2’s rear design unsuccessful, the manufacturer has decided to focus on the front end and interior, which is more cost-effective for a planned refresh. The introduction of the Panoramic iDrive system is a significant change that should improve the car’s appeal, even if the exterior changes are not radical. This shows that BMW is betting on technological features as a key advantage, even in models that are not entirely new.
