BMW discovered 145 new iX3s whose body panels may vibrate and shock during charging

New BMW iX3: two recalls due to risk of electric shock and airbag issues

The second-generation BMW iX3 received positive reviews, marking a significant step forward compared to its predecessor and offering a range typically associated with Chinese electric vehicles. However, the launch has not been without problems. Two recalls have already been announced for this electric SUV in Germany, and one of them is particularly concerning.

First recall: risk of electric shock

The first recall occurred at the end of May and involves 145 vehicles built between November 25, 2025, and February 20, 2026. According to BMW, these iX3 models are equipped with an onboard charger that converts alternating current to direct current, and it may be faulty. The defect could cause the vehicle’s body panels to be under voltage during charging.

BMW states that no injuries are known at this time, but acknowledges that owners could receive a severe electric shock if they touch the vehicle at the wrong moment.

The solution to the problem is quite simple: the onboard chargers on the affected models will be replaced, regardless of whether they are actually defective. It is better to err on the side of caution with high-voltage electric vehicles. Overall, the recall covers 145 vehicles worldwide, 28 of which are in Germany.

Second recall: dangerous side airbags

A few days later, on June 1, a second recall occurred. This time, BMW reports that the side airbags may not have been fastened according to specification. There are two concerns: the airbag may not deploy properly during a crash, and the gas generator could shift from its position and strike occupants.

The affected iX3 vehicles were built between December 18, 2025, and May 8, 2026. This is the larger of the two campaigns, covering 4,843 vehicles worldwide, including 1,071 in Germany. As with the charger issue, there are no known accidents or injuries related to the airbag defect.

In this case, BMW states that it will check the bolts securing the side airbags and, if necessary, rectify any issues.

Although both recalls have not led to any incidents, they demonstrate that even premium manufacturers can face problems in the early stages of production of new models. For iX3 owners, this is a reminder of the importance of promptly responding to official notices, as free rectification of potentially dangerous defects is not just a formality but a guarantee of safety. It is worth noting that the scale of the airbag recall is quite significant (nearly 5,000 vehicles), which may indicate a systemic error on the assembly line rather than an isolated part defect.
