Dirtier Than Gas Stations: An Unexpected Drawback of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Air Pollution Near Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

A study by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) found that the air near fast-charging stations for electric vehicles contains more fine PM2.5 particles than even near some gas stations. These particles, which are 30 times smaller than a human hair, can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream.

Source of Pollution

The highest levels of PM2.5 were recorded near the power cabinets of charging stations. Researchers believe that the fans in these cabinets, which prevent overheating, stir up dust and fine particles. However, just a few meters away, the concentration of particles significantly decreases, and at a distance of a few hundred meters, it completely levels out to the background level.

Although electric vehicles remain a more eco-friendly option compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, scientists propose adding filters to the power cabinets of charging stations to reduce emissions. For now, drivers are advised to stay in their cars during charging or move away from the station.

The research highlights that even “clean” technologies can have unexpected environmental consequences that require additional study and improvement.
