Return of Buick Sedans to the American Market
For many years, Buick has treated sedans like an old photo album—pleasant memories but safely tucked away in a drawer, at least in North America. In China, this body type continues to live. Now, new reports suggest the brand may be considering offering a genuine four-door car in American dealerships again.
Assessing the Possibility of a Sedan Release
According to a new report, General Motors is assessing the possibility of releasing a Buick sedan for the U.S. market. This would be a significant shift, considering Buick’s current American lineup consists entirely of crossovers like the Encore GX, Envision, Envista, and Enclave.
The potential sedan could be based on the Alpha 2 architecture. This is a family of rear-wheel-drive platforms expected to underpin the next generation of the Cadillac CT5 and is slated for production in Michigan.
Absence of Sedans Since 2020
If the project gets the green light, it would mark Buick’s return to the sedan segment in the U.S. for the first time since the Regal disappeared after the 2020 model year. Since then, the brand has followed the industry’s general trend and focused exclusively on SUVs and crossovers.
Of course, there is a reason why Buick once abandoned sedans. Over the past decade, Americans enthusiastically traded low roofs for higher ones and the increased ground clearance that comes with them. Crossovers and SUVs sell, and when something sells well, you tend to keep producing it.
Global Production of Buick Sedans
However, on a global scale, Buick never completely stopped producing sedans. In China, the brand still sells models like the Verano Pro, Regal, LaCrosse, and the newer Electra L7. So, engineering experience and design solutions are still very much relevant.
Changing Buyer Preferences
There are signs that the pendulum may be gradually swinging back toward sedans in the U.S., even if only slightly. Recent Escalent research indicates that younger buyers are showing renewed interest in traditional passenger cars, even claiming that American teenagers are more interested in sedans than in pickups or SUVs.
Future of the Potential Sedan
Whether this rumored sedan ever makes it to production is a whole different story. Automakers explore countless ideas that never leave the planning room. Nevertheless, the mere fact that Buick might be considering a sedan again is interesting. In an era dominated by crossovers, the idea of the three-shield brand quietly bringing a real car back into the lineup feels almost rebellious, and that’s not something you can often say about Buick.
The Buick Electra L7
Buick’s potential decision to focus on the Alpha 2 platform for a possible new sedan indicates a desire to offer a more dynamic and possibly more premium product than previous models. It could also be a strategic response to growing competition from electric sedans, which are gaining popularity. The success of such a return would largely depend on whether Buick can effectively combine its heritage of comfort with modern technology and design to attract both traditional brand loyalists and a new generation of buyers.
