New Electric Kei Car from BYD
Chinese automaker BYD is preparing to enter the Japanese market with the compact electric car Racco, which has become the brand’s first kei car. Photos of the model appeared online ahead of the official premiere at the Japan Mobility Show.
Styling and Design
The overall construction of the car meets the strict requirements of the Japanese kei car market. The model features a vertical silhouette, a short hood, sliding doors, and an almost non-existent rear overhang. The window and pillar design is reminiscent of the Mitsubishi eK Space, while the front headlights and overall stature are borrowed from the Daihatsu Tanto.
Technical Features
It is anticipated that the BYD Racco will receive two battery options with capacities of 20 kWh and 40 kWh, providing a range of approximately 180 km. The model will support fast charging with a power of up to 100 kW. The low-mounted battery will improve handling compared to traditional kei cars.
Interior and Equipment
The car’s interior is likely to feature a digital instrument panel with a large multimedia system, which is not typical for this segment. It is expected to be equipped with advanced ADAS driver assistance systems and a heat pump for climate control.
Prices and Competitors
Sales of the BYD Racco will start next year, with pre-orders beginning in the summer of 2026. The starting price of the kei car is estimated to be approximately 2.5 million yen before subsidies. Among its electric competitors are the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV.
In addition to the kei car, BYD will also present a new T35 commercial vehicle for the Japanese market at the exhibition, featuring a cab-over-engine design and a fully electric powertrain.

BYD’s entry into the Japanese kei car market could significantly impact local manufacturers, who traditionally dominate this segment. The offered price and technical specifications make the Racco an attractive option for urban conditions, especially considering the growing popularity of electric vehicles in Japan. The success of this model could pave the way for other Chinese brands seeking to expand their presence in one of the world’s most demanding automotive markets.
