Budget Fastback Citroen Looks Fast Only When Standing Still

Premiere of the Citroen Basalt Vision Concept

Stellantis presented the Basalt Vision concept at the auto show in São Paulo. The model received a lowered suspension, 18-inch wheels with red brake calipers, a diffuser, dual exhaust pipes, and a rear spoiler, but no performance updates are planned.

Features of the Budget Crossover

The Citroen Basalt, also known as the C3 X, is an affordable fastback-crossover sold in South America and India. It is designed for practical buyers who also want a car with individuality. Despite its humble origins, the manufacturer presented a sportier concept version at the International Auto Show in São Paulo.

Design and Exterior

The Basalt Vision concept, which was previously presented digitally, received a number of visual updates. The lowered suspension and new 18-inch wheels make it more expressive compared to the production model. The massive glossy black diffuser on the rear bumper stands out, featuring a Formula 1-style LED stop light and dual chrome exhaust pipes.

Styling Details

The rear of the car is complemented by black inserts between the LED lights, emphasizing the ducktail-style spoiler. An additional spoiler is installed on the roof. Red accents frame the body, decals are placed on the sides and hood, and Vision emblems are on the doors. The concept also retains the old double Chevron Citroen logo, executed in black.

Technical Specifications

The car is based on the Basalt Dark Edition, which is the top trim in Brazil. This means all changes are purely external. Under the hood remains the familiar turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine, which develops up to 128 hp when using ethanol. This is the most powerful unit in Citroen’s local portfolio. The engine is paired with a CVT transmission that simulates seven gears.

Future of the Model

The Basalt Vision concept is more of a design experiment than a precursor to a production version. However, it is possible that some of its styling elements will be used in future trims, similar to the C3 Sport Edition in India. Although the Citroen Basalt will remain available primarily in South American and Indian markets, Fiat is preparing a mechanically similar fastback, which is also planned to be introduced in Europe as part of the Panda family.

Other Citroen Exhibits

In addition to the updated Basalt Vision, at the auto show in São Paulo, Citroen presented the new generation C5 Aircross, the urban electric vehicles Ami Tonic and Buggy, as well as the brand’s latest Formula E race car.

The Basalt Vision concept demonstrates how even budget models can get a more expressive and aggressive look through thoughtful details. Although the technical specifications remained unchanged, the visual updates may attract the attention of young buyers who value style. Such experiments often become the basis for special series or limited editions, expanding the brand’s range without significant investment in developing new platforms.
