In Four Years, the Polestar 6 Reminds Us of the Tesla Roadster

Polestar 6 Release Delay

It’s not just Tesla that’s facing difficulties bringing halo roadsters to life. The production version of the impressive Polestar O2 two-door concept, known as the Model 6, was supposed to hit the market this year. However, that won’t happen, and those who have already placed orders are forced to wait for their car until at least 2029.

Company Priorities

Polestar, like many other young automakers, has ambitions to create a large family of models but remains a relatively small player in the rapidly growing and extremely competitive electric vehicle market. Considering this, the company has temporarily postponed work on the Polestar 6 to focus on the updated Model 2 and the next all-new development—the compact Polestar 7 SUV.

During a conversation with Auto Express at a recent company event in Gothenburg, Polestar CEO Michael Lorscheider described the Polestar 6 as a “low-volume” product, meaning customers will have to wait.

We are targeting the high-profit potential of segments, and that’s what we had to do first. We are working on Model 6 as a high-end product. The Polestar 6 is still in the plans, but plans can change.

Comparison with the Tesla Roadster

Such delays are not uncommon in the automotive industry, but in this case, Polestar seems to be following Tesla’s unfortunate example. It has been over eight years since Tesla unveiled the second-generation Roadster, and those who placed $50,000 deposits have still not received their cars.

Similarly, Polestar began accepting $25,000 deposits for the limited-run Polestar 6 LA Concept (only 500 units) back in 2022, promising a launch in 2026. Now, those who ordered the car will wait for it for at least seven years, and that’s only if the release schedule until 2029 is not pushed back again.

Technical Specifications

Like the Polestar 5, the new Model 6 will be built on an 800-volt electric architecture with a 112 kWh battery pack. The flagship Polestar 5 Performance version combines this with two electric motors producing 872 hp and 1015 Nm of torque—exactly the kind of performance expected from the Model 6 as well.

This situation vividly illustrates the challenges new manufacturers face on the path from concept to series production, especially when it comes to niche, emotional models. Focusing on mass-market and profitable segments like crossovers is a logical step to ensure the brand’s financial stability. However, prolonged delays can test the loyalty of even the most devoted customers who have made significant financial contributions while waiting for a unique product. The success of the Polestar 2 and the future Polestar 7 will be critical for the company to have the resources and market trust to bring its boldest ideas, like the Polestar 6 roadster, to life.
