Chery Couldn’t Afford a Defender, So It Created Its Own for $16,000

New Fulwin X3L: The Long Wheelbase Version

This original Fulwin X3L SUV is manufactured by the Chinese company Chery. Contrary to what one might think, it is not a fully electric vehicle but a model with a range-extender powertrain, making it more suitable for tackling challenging off-road conditions.

Chery’s Latest SUV Wants To Be A Porsche Until You See The Rear

If the design of the Fulwin X3L seems familiar to those knowledgeable about Chinese models (and the Land Rover Defender), it’s because it is a renamed version of the iCar 03T, introduced by Chery last year. It remains unclear why the company decided to release two practically identical models under different brands, but this is 2025, and times are truly interesting.

Dimensions and Design

The X3L has a length of 4545 mm, a width of 1950 mm, a height of 1815 mm, and a wheelbase of 2783 mm. The styling clearly borrows features from classics like the Land Rover Defender and, to a lesser extent, the Mercedes G-Class, creating a square, straight-line shape that attracts attention on Chinese streets. The prices are aggressive: from 119,900 yuan to 149,900 yuan.

Technical Specifications

The X3L is equipped with the Kunpeng Golden powertrain, which combines a 1.5-liter turbo engine producing 154 hp with a single rear electric motor of 248 hp or two motors in the all-wheel-drive version, delivering a combined 422 hp and 505 Nm of torque. According to the manufacturer, the X3L accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, which is very fast for this type of vehicle.

The all-electric range is reportedly between 135 km and 215 km depending on the version. Combined with the engine and fuel tank, the X3L is capable of covering up to 1200 km without stopping.

Off-Road Capabilities

Standard features include a range of different driving modes and off-road settings, including a tank turn function, off-road cruise control, and slow-speed movement options. Key features include side steps, side-opening tailgate doors, and options for several different modification kits for the SUV.

The interior looks quite pleasant, though it won’t impress with creativity. Key elements include a 15.6-inch infotainment display, a small digital instrument cluster, rectangular air vents, and sturdy grab handles.

This model demonstrates how Chinese manufacturers are increasingly focused on creating versatile vehicles that combine environmental friendliness, high performance, and functionality for various driving conditions. Growing competition in the electric and hybrid car market is stimulating the emergence of more innovative solutions, making the Fulwin X3L an interesting example of modern trends in automotive manufacturing.
