Chinese Freelander with British approval: a new take on collaboration
The revival of a model produced in China with a British stamp of quality would once have given product planners a real headache. However, Jaguar Land Rover is completely unbothered by it. Models from the revived Freelander brand could head to Europe and the UK, and JLR does not consider them a threat to its own showrooms.
Chery and JLR partnership: a new life for a legendary name
The Freelander name was brought back to life by Chinese automaker Chery in partnership with JLR. The first model, the Freelander 8, was unveiled at the recent Beijing Auto Show, and a range of other models will follow over the coming years.

Initially, sales will be limited to China, but Chery plans to launch the new Freelander models in overseas markets. According to Freelander brand head Wen Fei, these models will not simply be adapted from Chinese versions; instead, separate derivatives will be created to meet the requirements of each specific market.
JLR’s position: “Let them decide for themselves”
According to JLR CEO P.B. Balaji, the automaker will allow Chery to “decide for themselves” whether they want to sell these models in the UK, and does not believe they pose a threat to existing JLR models.
A more stylish Defender?
“The car will initially be sold primarily in China, and then they have to decide their plans for taking it to the rest of the world,” he told Autocar. “From our side, our role is to ensure the design lives up to what JLR represents, and from then on it’s entirely their baby. We see this as ‘together we expand the market’. So let them decide how they want to play that game.”
Freelander 8 technical specifications
Jaguar Land Rover’s openness to launching the new Freelander brand in the UK came shortly after the release of new photos and details of the 8 model from China. The data confirms its length is up to 5,185 mm, width is 2,050 mm, and height is 1,898 mm, with a generous wheelbase of 3,040 mm.
The Freelander 8 is based on the iMax architecture, which supports battery electric vehicles, range-extender models, and plug-in hybrids. Initially, the model will be launched in an EREV version with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. Power and torque figures have not yet been confirmed, nor has the electric range.
Key technologies and prospects
Key technologies used in the Freelander include LiDAR, the Huawei Qianwu ADS 4.1 intelligent driving system, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 automotive chip. Further details will be announced in the coming months.
This collaboration between Chery and JLR is an interesting example of how traditional automakers can leverage Chinese technology and manufacturing capabilities to revive historic brands. The Freelander, once a compact Land Rover SUV, is now transforming into a significantly larger vehicle offering modern powertrains. If these models do indeed reach the UK market, they will likely be sold through Chery’s dealer networks, not JLR’s, thus avoiding direct competition within a single brand. This also signals the growing role of Chinese automakers on the world stage, increasingly acting not just as manufacturers but also as partners for established Western marques.
