A New Brand for the Western Market
The Chinese automaker Chery has introduced a new sub-brand, Lepas, created specifically to meet the needs of buyers from Western countries. The new L8 SUV, which has already been presented, will be sold in the markets of Europe, Australia, and South Africa, and its targets are legendary models such as the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5.
Technical Features and Platform
The name Lepas combines the words “Leopard,” “Leap,” and “Passion.” The car is built on a completely new modular platform for New Energy Vehicles (NEV) from Chery. Details regarding powertrains for markets such as the UK or Australia are still limited, but it is known that in Indonesia the model is already sold with a hybrid powertrain, like the Jaecoo 7. This same unit will most likely be offered in other regions as well.
Combining a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and an 18.3 kWh battery, Lepas states that in South Africa the L8 will have an electric-only range of just 66.4 miles (107 km) and a combined range of 808 miles (1300 km). The engine power is 141 hp (105 kW) and 155 lb-ft (210 Nm), while the electric motor adds 201 hp (150 kW) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm).
Exterior Design
There is nothing particularly inspiring in the design of the L8. The split LED headlights in a way resemble some new Audi SUVs. There is also a massive chrome grille, which, in Chery’s opinion, is obviously meant to appeal to Western buyers.
Technological Interior
Among the many Chinese SUVs with often identical interiors, the Lepas L8’s interior has several interesting elements. The most intriguing is the portrait-oriented 13.2-inch infotainment display in the center of the dashboard, which looks a bit more refined than the landscape tablet screens that have become widespread in new models.
Additionally, Lepas has installed a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, metal speaker grilles on the doors, and a textured dashboard panel. Below the central screen, there is a prominent volume control knob, as well as physical switches for fan speed and other climate control functions.
Price and Availability
Information on market prices has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be confirmed in the coming months.
The emergence of Lepas is another step by Chinese manufacturers in global expansion, particularly into traditionally conservative markets. The emphasis on hybrid technology with a substantial electric range could be a balanced decision for regions where the infrastructure for fully electric vehicles is still developing. The model’s success among buyers accustomed to the quality and reliability of Japanese competitors will depend not only on technical specifications but also on durability, service levels, and building trust in a new name on the market.
