Chery patents a compact pickup capable of spreading the Ford Maverick idea worldwide

Chery prepares a compact pickup in the style of the Ford Maverick

Patent images have surfaced online, apparently showing a new compact pickup from Chinese automaker Chery. The photos, first published by Cars.co.za and later picked up by CarExpert, have formed the basis for renders showing what a production version might look like. These drawings are the clearest evidence yet that Chery intends to enter the compact ‘lifestyle’ pickup segment popularized by the Ford Maverick.

Although Chery has not officially confirmed the project, applications filed in South Africa point to a production model that combines crossover comfort with pickup practicality. Based on this model, an SUV is also expected to be created under the ‘Tiggo’ sub-brand, targeting markets in China, South America, South Africa, and parts of the Asia-Pacific region.

Urban strength and design

In terms of style, it is essentially a muscular crossover converted into a dual-cab pickup. At the front, it features a full-width LED light bar with a large ‘Chery’ inscription. Below are massive trim pieces, aluminum skid plates, and a dark bumper emphasizing its off-road character.

In profile, you can see a relatively short cargo bed, four doors (the rear ones have hidden handles), and a high beltline. The deeply contoured doors have distinctive indentations that flow into square wheel arches. The contrasting black roof and sport bar evoke associations with a certain Pontiac model. The rear is less extravagant: full-width LED taillights, a vertical tailgate, and textured inserts in the bumper.

Interior and technical platform

The interior remains undisclosed for now, but recent Chery launches, such as the larger Stockman, offer clues. The cabin is likely to feature a large infotainment display, a digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and over-the-air updates. Unlike the American Ford Maverick, the interior will probably be more premium, with high-quality plastics, ventilated front seats, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting. The rear seats will likely be folding, and the cargo bed will include a pass-through for long items.

Technically, the pickup will be based on the universal T1X platform, not a traditional ladder frame. An independent rear suspension is expected, providing more car-like handling.

Hybrid powertrain

Chery has several powertrain options in its arsenal. Base versions could get a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a newer 2.0-liter turbo motor producing 208 hp (155 kW) for top-tier models.

The availability of a plug-in hybrid version is almost guaranteed, as the latest Super Hybrid (CSH) system is already being implemented on models in the Tiggo lineup. This setup combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor and battery, providing up to 90 km (56 miles) of electric range. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions are expected, along with a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function.

Competitors and debut

The new Chery pickup, positioned below the mid-size ‘Stockman’, will have main competitors like the Fiat Toro, Chevrolet Montana, Ram Rampage, VW Tukan, and the unnamed pickup based on the Toyota Corolla Cross.

Production start dates have not been confirmed, but given the patent applications already published, a debut is expected within the next 12 months. While this model won’t appear on the US market, it makes you wonder: should more manufacturers develop pickups on a car platform?

This move by Chery is a logical continuation of the global trend towards vehicle versatility. Compact pickups based on crossovers are becoming increasingly popular, offering the practicality of a truck without sacrificing the comfort and handling of a passenger car. Abandoning the traditional ladder frame in favor of a universal platform allows for reduced weight, improved fuel efficiency, and makes the vehicle more appealing to urban dwellers. If Chery can offer a competitive price and a rich set of options, this pickup has every chance of becoming a serious player in developing markets, where demand for such utilitarian yet modern vehicles is constantly growing.
