Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X: The New King of Acceleration
The Chevrolet Corvette has long been known as a “giant killer.” Over the past decades, it turned into a “supercar killer,” and now it has become a true “hypercar killer.” And this is confirmed by independent tests. The production ZR1X, a flagship model with 1,250 horsepower (932 kW), of which 1,064 hp comes from a twin-turbocharged flat-plane crank V8 and the rest from a front electric motor, accelerated from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 1.8 seconds and covered the quarter mile in 8.9 seconds at 155 mph (249 km/h).
Simply put, Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Koenigsegg, Pagani, and others, including electric cars, simply cannot keep up with it.
How the Tests Were Conducted
It is important to note that these figures were obtained from independent testing by Car and Driver magazine, not Chevrolet. The magazine recently retested the same ZR1X it evaluated earlier this year, after engineers suggested that dusty conditions might have prevented the car from reaching its full potential.
The new results were 0.3 seconds faster to 60 mph (97 km/h) and in the quarter mile compared to the first test. This second attempt took place in Michigan on new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires mounted on carbon fiber wheels and yielded results that match Chevrolet’s own ambitious claims.
Technical Details and Conditions
Let’s clarify exactly which car we are talking about. It was the ZR1X, an all-wheel-drive hybrid Corvette equipped with the ZTK Performance package and a large rear wing. It also had street camber settings, not more aggressive track settings. Testers used the most aggressive launch control mode, set at 3,500 rpm, and could barely get the tires to spin during the warm-up.
They note that such runs, of which they performed two in each direction to confirm results, are only possible under ideal conditions. This means good track temperature, sufficient battery charge for the electric motors, correct engine temperature, and, as mentioned, proper road grip. All of this combined allowed the ZR1X to become the fastest car Car and Driver has ever tested.
Comparison with Competitors
It outpaced the 1,234-hp Lucid Air Sapphire and the 1,019-hp Porsche Taycan Turbo GT by 0.1 seconds each to 60 mph, leaving the 1,578-hp Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 0.4 seconds behind with a time of 2.2 seconds. All figures include a 0.2-second rollout.

Covering 1,320 feet (402 m) in just 8.9 seconds, it beat both the Lucid and the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport (9.1 seconds) by 0.2 seconds. Car and Driver also recorded acceleration to 100 mph (161 km/h) in 3.7 seconds, to 150 mph (241 km/h) in 8.3 seconds, to 190 mph (306 km/h) in 20.3 seconds, and a manufacturer-claimed top speed of 225 mph (362 km/h). This is impressive for a car Chevrolet prices at around $250,000, especially considering that the cars it beats often cost many times more.
This result is not just a technical achievement but also a powerful signal for the entire automotive industry. The Corvette ZR1X demonstrates that for a relatively small amount of money, one can get performance that surpasses the world’s most expensive hypercars. This calls into question the justification for enormous spending on exotic brands, as the American “people’s” sports car offers not just competition but a direct advantage in key acceleration metrics. The success of the ZR1X also underscores the effectiveness of hybrid technologies, which combine the power of an internal combustion engine with the instant torque of electric motors, creating a true acceleration monster unattainable for pure gasoline or even electric competitors in this price range.
