Chevy discontinued the Sonic in 2020, and now releases a crossover it calls a coupe

Presentation of the Updated Model

Chevrolet has introduced a completely updated Sonic model in the Brazilian market. This version is radically different from the car whose sales were discontinued in the US in 2020. Instead of a classic sedan or hatchback, the new Sonic has transformed into a crossover, which the manufacturer boldly calls a coupe.

New Exterior and Design

The front of the car has received a distinctive split-type radiator grille and unique light clusters. The top line is adorned with narrow LED daytime running lights, which also function as turn signals. Below are the main headlights with projector lenses, which, according to the company, are approximately 20% brighter than traditional lighting devices.

Chevrolet is also notable for introducing Chevrolet’s updated bowtie logo. It features a black finish as well as a “more horizontal” design.

This model has also become the first to feature the updated Chevrolet bowtie logo. It is executed in black and has received a more horizontal design. Over 70 accessories are offered for the crossover, including an option with an illuminated logo.

Side and Rear View

The side panels and rear of the car, especially in the RS version, are decorated with plastic trim and black accents. Designers have added a roof rack capable of carrying up to 50 kg of cargo, as well as unique 17-inch wheels, whose design is specific to each trim level.

The rear, inspired by the design of the electric Equinox EV, features a pronounced spoiler, an angled rear window, a full-width LED light strip, and a massive rear bumper.

Dimensions and Platform

The new crossover is built on the Global Emerging Markets platform, developed for emerging markets. Its length is 4230 mm, width is 1770 mm, and height is 1530 mm. In size, it is 178 mm shorter than the American Trailblazer and occupies a niche between the upcoming Onix Activ and the existing Tracker model.

Interior and Technology

The manufacturer has only partially shown the interior but noted that the car has received a virtual cockpit that combines a digital instrument cluster with enhanced multimedia functions and connectivity capabilities. The cabin uses soft-touch materials, glossy black plastic inserts, and premium seat upholstery.

Engines and Future Sales

Detailed information about powertrains is not yet available. However, Chevrolet has made it clear that in the Brazilian market, the model will be exclusively with turbocharged engines. Sales of the updated Sonic will begin in May, at which time all technical details and prices are likely to be announced.

Interestingly, the company developed this car entirely in a virtual environment, using processes driven by artificial intelligence.

The return of the Sonic name on a global scale, but in a completely new form, indicates profound changes in Chevrolet’s strategy regarding compact cars. The transition from an affordable subcompact hatchback to a high-tech crossover aimed at specific markets demonstrates the brand’s adaptation to modern trends, where crossovers dominate, even in the smallest segments. The emphasis on virtual development and artificial intelligence could become a new standard for accelerating the creation of models intended for specific regions. The success of this model could determine the future fate of other classic names in the Chevrolet lineup in a rapidly changing world.
