In Salt Lake City, a 55-year-old man posing as a California attorney purchased a Porsche worth $218 thousand. According to the investigation, he presented forged documents and a $100 thousand check, which later turned out to be invalid. The man is currently charged with a number of crimes, including fraud, theft, and forgery of documents.
As reported, the incident occurred in August 2023. Robert Wesley McCorkle used another person’s name, photograph, and personal data of a real attorney to arrange the purchase of the car. He also signed the contract on behalf of the victim of his scam. After receiving the keys to the Porsche, the criminal disappeared, promising to pay the remaining amount later.
Previous Charges
Police have established that McCorkle may be involved in similar crimes in Nevada. He is currently charged with fraud, forgery, and theft. The court has ruled for his arrest.
This is not the first time criminals have tried to obtain premium cars using forged checks. Recently, in Georgia, a 19-year-old youth used $545 thousand in fake checks to buy a Porsche.
Such stories remind us of the importance of verifying documents and payment instruments during expensive purchases. Although fraudsters find new ways to deceive, law enforcement is actively working to expose them. In McCorkle’s case, his past affairs in Nevada may complicate the situation – the court may take his criminal history into account when sentencing.
