On May 2, highway patrol officers spotted a car in Oakland that was listed as stolen. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver responded by fleeing, which escalated into a chase to neighboring Berkeley.
Soon, the driver threw a bag out of the window. A police officer nearby discovered a grenade with a partially pulled safety pin inside it.
The chase continued to a dead-end street where the criminal attempted to flee on foot but was detained. A search of the car did not reveal any additional explosive devices.
A team of sappers from the University of California was called to neutralize the grenade. The area of the incident was blocked off, and residents and visitors of the surrounding buildings were evacuated.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Kutsey was illegally residing in an apartment building in Berkeley. A joint search by police, the FBI, and sappers did not find any additional explosives.
The suspect was placed in Santa Rita Jail, where he is charged with illegal possession and transportation of explosive devices, auto theft, fleeing from justice, and resisting arrest.
