Fleeing from the police usually leads to a substantial prison term, but for a 28-year-old resident of Berkeley (California), the situation is much more serious – during the chase, he threw a live grenade out of the stolen car. If Carlos Kutsey does not have a qualified lawyer, he should find one urgently.
On May 2, highway patrol officers spotted a car in Oakland that was listed as stolen. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver responded by fleeing, which escalated into a chase to neighboring Berkeley.
Soon, the driver threw a bag out of the window. A police officer nearby discovered a grenade inside it with the safety pin partially pulled.
The chase continued to a dead-end street where the criminal attempted to flee on foot but was detained. A search of the car did not reveal any additional explosive devices.
A bomb squad from the University of California was called in to neutralize the grenade. The area of the incident was cordoned off, and residents and visitors of the surrounding buildings were evacuated.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Kutsey was illegally residing in a Berkeley apartment building. A joint search by police, the FBI, and the bomb squad did not find any additional explosives.
The suspect was placed in Santa Rita Jail, where he is charged with illegal possession and transportation of explosive devices, auto theft, fleeing from justice, and resisting arrest.
