Fleeing from the police usually leads to a substantial prison term, but for a 28-year-old resident of Berkeley (California), the situation is much more serious – during the chase, he threw a live grenade out of the stolen car. If Carlos Kutsey does not have a qualified lawyer, he should find one urgently.
On May 2, highway patrol officers spotted a car in Oakland that was listed as stolen. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver responded by fleeing, which turned into a chase into neighboring Berkeley.
Soon, the driver threw a bag out of the window. A police officer nearby found a grenade inside it with the safety pin partially pulled.
The chase continued to a dead-end street where the criminal attempted to flee on foot but was detained. During the search of the car, no additional explosive devices were found.
A bomb squad from the University of California was called to neutralize the grenade. The scene was cordoned off, and residents and visitors of the surrounding buildings were evacuated.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Kutsey was illegally residing in a Berkeley apartment building. A joint search by police, the FBI, and bomb technicians did not reveal any additional explosives.
The suspect was placed in Santa Rita Jail, where he is charged with illegal possession and transportation of explosive devices, auto theft, fleeing from justice, and resisting arrest.
