An Unexpected Hit
Genesis has been actively working on the production version of the GV60 Magma and presented a stylish mid-engine sports car, but the concept that truly resonated online turned out to be a different one. It’s the G90 Wingback. Officially, it remains a concept with no guarantee of series production, but Genesis is studying market reaction, which looks promising.
Potential Success
Luc Donckerwolke recently stated that he receives feedback suggesting powerful wagons are not that popular outside Germany, but the success of competitors in the American market indicates the opposite.
There are reasons to believe he is right. Sustained interest in models like the Audi RS6 and BMW M5 Touring points to potential demand for similar cars, even if the G90 Wingback is aimed at a higher segment. It should be viewed not as a competitor to the RS6, but as a hypothetical RS8 Avant or M7 Touring, which are not on the market. The base G90 model is a full-size luxury sedan with a length of 5,205 mm.
Technical Implementation
The discussion is supported by technical feasibility. The concept is already realized, and according to Donckerwolke, series production would not require significant investment in components. The Wingback shares seat mounting points, wheelbase, and suspension elements.
He noted that such cars can be quickly launched into series production with minimal upfront costs.
Manfred Harrer, Genesis R&D engineer, confirmed that the G90 platform is already being upgraded for the Magma variant, which directly relates to the development of the Wingback and X Gran Coupe. The platform is being prepared for high dynamic performance, including improved handling, adaptive dampers, and comfortable high-speed driving without excessive stiffness.
The Engine Question
The choice of powertrain remains key. The most powerful version of the G90 is currently equipped with a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 producing 409 hp, which is insufficient to compete with BMW, Audi, or Mercedes, which offer supercar-level power.
Rumors suggest that Genesis is developing a new V8, which could be used in a future mid-engine supercar, as well as in road-going versions of the X Gran Coupe and Convertible. If this engine is realized, the Wingback could become a true leader in its class. Although economic feasibility might be an obstacle, if the manufacturer does launch the model, it could find its price-conscious buyer.
The premium wagon market continues to evolve, and the emergence of a car like the G90 Wingback could significantly expand the offering for enthusiasts of powerful and practical models. The technological base and design of the concept demonstrate the brand’s readiness for innovation, and decisions regarding series production will depend on global demand and the possibilities of integrating new powertrains.
