Did a Former McLaren Designer Improve the P1 or Make It Worse?

Former McLaren Designer Works on P1 Update

Modifying cars like the McLaren P1 always carries the risk of losing some of the original’s authenticity. However, in this case, Frank Stephenson himself, who led McLaren’s design in the early 2010s when the P1 was first introduced, has joined the update effort.

The joint project with YouTuber Tavarish, who bought a damaged P1 in 2022, is in its early stages. The team has already published renders of the future car, showing noticeable design changes: new ventilation holes, modified doors, an updated rear end, and wheel rims with aerodynamic covers. However, the main idea of the original is preserved.

Future Plans

Frankstephenson Design plans to complete work on the P1 Evo by 2026. Stephenson, who left McLaren in 2017, hopes this project will draw attention to his studio. He is also known for other iconic projects, such as the BMW Mini (2001) and the Ferrari F430 (2004).

This is not the first time a renowned designer has returned to their past work. For example, Ian Callum modernized the Aston Martin Vanquish, which he created back in the 1990s. If Stephenson decides to update his other projects, he has many options to choose from.

The P1 Evo demonstrates how modern technology can be combined with classic design without losing the spirit of the original. This project could be the start of a new wave of custom cars created with the involvement of their original creators.
