Will There Be a Place for a Spare Wheel in Your Car?

Car Manufacturers Are Abandoning Spare Wheels

Modern car manufacturers are increasingly abandoning spare wheels in favor of emergency repair kits. The main reasons are weight reduction, space savings, and cost reduction. However, such kits often prove ineffective for serious tire damage, such as sidewall tears or large punctures.

As one Tesla owner explained, after several cases of flat tires, he decided to return to a classic spare wheel. Although it takes up extra space in the trunk, it gives him confidence on the road.

“After using the repair kit a few times, I realized it doesn’t always work. Now I carry a real spare wheel with me”

Advantages and Disadvantages of the New Trend

Manufacturers claim that emergency kits are lighter, take up less space, and sometimes allow for a quicker return to the road. However, in cases of serious damage, they are useless, and drivers have to wait for a tow truck. Furthermore, kits with liquid sealant have a limited shelf life and can only be used once.

On the other hand, a spare wheel requires additional storage space, and in some models, it can impair the view through the rear window. Solving this dilemma remains an individual choice for each driver – comfort or practicality?

Lately, more and more drivers are facing problems due to the lack of a spare wheel. This is especially relevant for electric vehicle owners, where weight and space play a critical role. Some companies offer compact temporary tires, but they are not always an ideal solution for long trips.
