This is a new compact G-Class model from Mercedes that fully inherits the features of the original

First shots of the new compact G-Class

Automotive spies have for the first time photographed a prototype of the future compact version of the Mercedes G-Class, which is already undergoing testing on public roads. Despite the dense camouflage wrap, the characteristic features of the “Geländewagen” are easily recognizable.

Comparison with other models

A comparison with the 1900 mm high V-Class minivan shows that the new compact G-Class is significantly lower. In the shots where it is driving behind the full-size EQS SUV, the difference in height becomes even more noticeable.

This is a G-Class that went through the washing machine on a hot cycle and came out 15% smaller, but just as cubic.

Design and characteristic features

Despite its compact size, the model retains all the key design elements of the G-Class: a vertical windshield, straight side panels, and a flat roofline. The presence of a spare wheel on the rear doors is particularly pleasing, which is a nod to the full-size version.

Electric version and future prospects

One of the most important details is the fully enclosed radiator grille, confirming the model’s electric nature. The manufacturer has already confirmed that the compact G-Class will debut as an electric vehicle.

Considering the unsuccessful launch of the electric version of the full-size G-Class and the slowdown in the transition to EVs in key markets, it can be assumed that Mercedes is considering an option with an internal combustion engine or a hybrid setup.

Technical features and competitors

The SUV will be built on a special frame, similar to a traditional body-on-frame construction, which is a rarity in the world of electric vehicles. This indicates serious intentions regarding off-road capabilities, not just external inheritance.

Mercedes will not be without competitors in this segment. Land Rover is preparing its own compact version of the Defender, which will lead to an interesting confrontation between two legendary SUVs in a reduced format.

The appearance of the compact G-Class could significantly expand the audience of this legendary model, making it more accessible for urban conditions without sacrificing its core character. Technical solutions, such as a body-on-frame construction for an electric vehicle, demonstrate an unusual development approach that could become a new trend for premium SUVs.
