This 1973 Safari Mustang Looks Ready To Hunt Broncos

Unique Direction for a Classic Mustang

Classic Ford Mustangs are traditionally associated with drag racing and road racing; however, this specimen demonstrates a completely unexpected approach. The concept of off-road use is rarely associated with the Mustang, making this project particularly expressive and memorable.

Radical Transformation

This lifted 1973 Mustang SportsRoof with a safari theme is listed at auction and ready to surprise its future owner. The seller initially planned to recreate the Mach 1 style, but later the project took a significantly more radical direction. The vehicle received a completely redesigned suspension with increased ground clearance, including new shock absorbers, suspension arms, ball joints, rear leaf springs, and U-bolts.

The package is complemented by 31-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Legend MTZ tires and Magnum 500-style wheels.

Exterior and Powertrain

The vehicle’s exterior is finished in medium turquoise with Mach 1 graphics and custom door lettering. LED headlights are supplemented by Hella fog lamps, roof rails, and a hood with a Ram Air system reminiscent of a snorkel. Under the hood sits an 8-cylinder engine with a displacement of 351 cubic inches.

The auction description does not specify exact power figures, but in standard configuration this engine developed at least 240 horsepower.

The engine has been upgraded with an Edelbrock intake manifold, tubular headers, an X-pipe, and MagnaFlow mufflers. The powertrain works in conjunction with a rebuilt 3-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

Technical Features and Potential Issues

The seller also completely rebuilt the power steering system, updated the braking system, and replaced the steering linkage. However, the car has certain features that require attention.

In particular, the identification numbers have discrepancies: one plate indicates a SportsRoof with a 302 engine, manufactured in Detroit, while the door sticker contains a different serial number. However, the title succession defines the vehicle as a 1973 Mustang Mach 1.

There are also certain cosmetic flaws: uneven gaps between body panels, unsecured wiring in the interior. For true off-road use, installing an oil pan skid plate would also be advisable.

Impressions and Conclusions

Despite the listed features, this Mustang looks incredibly interesting and experimental. Its behavior off-road may be debatable, but the very existence of such a car proves that the potential for modifying the Mustang is virtually limitless.

Similar projects demonstrate how classic cars can find new life in unusual roles. Transforming a sports coupe into an off-roader not only expands the understanding of customization possibilities but also reflects a trend towards seeking alternative concepts for iconic models. Technical solutions such as lifted suspension and specialized equipment open new horizons for car enthusiasts seeking uniqueness and experimentation.
