Rare Buick GNX Sold for a Record Amount
The legendary Buick GNX, released in 1987, has become a true collector’s rarity. This model, which once cost $29,290, now sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars. At a recent auction, one of the 547 produced specimens (No. 274) went for $230,000, which is $88,000 more than last year’s bid.
The car is equipped with a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 engine from Buick and ASC/McLaren, producing 276 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque. Factory specifications allowed it to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. This GNX has only 2,200 miles on it, making it particularly attractive to collectors.
“Buick only ever built 547 examples of the GNX, and this one is number 274.”
Auction Details
The bidding war for this specimen heated up in the final minutes: 33 bids were placed in 27 minutes, driving the price up from $144,500 to the final $230,000. All GNXs were produced in black with distinctive 16-inch wheels, fender vents, and a three-section spoiler.
The price of $230,000 confirms the growing demand for rare specimens from the 80s, especially limited series like the GNX. Against the backdrop of modern electric cars, such vehicles remind us of an era when turbocharged engines and aggressive design defined the style of the time. The sale of this Buick for an amount that could buy several new premium cars demonstrates that the collector’s market remains unpredictable and emotional.
