This Renault Electric Car Honors a Legend But Completely Misses the Point

Special Version Renault 5 Monte Carlo Edition

Although the original Clio Williams remains an iconic hot hatchback, modern enthusiasts have to make do without a similar version in the current lineup. Instead, Renault has focused on the electric Alpine A290, built on the Renault 5 platform. However, for those who appreciate history and style, a special R5 variant with a retro design has emerged.

This version was created in collaboration with Dutch dealer Zeeuw & Zeeuw and design atelier Re-Volve. It features a blue body with a black roof, as well as gold accents on the grille, sides, and rear doors—a nod to the classic Clio Williams. The 19-inch wheels are also finished in gold.

Technical Features

Despite its sporty appearance, the Monte Carlo Edition did not receive any additional power. It is equipped with a 121 hp electric motor and a 40 kWh battery, providing up to 309 km (192 miles) of range. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 9 seconds, which is significantly slower than the original Clio Williams.

The price of the special version is €37,995, which is €8,000 more expensive than the base trim. Production is limited to the Netherlands, making this model a collector’s item for brand enthusiasts.

Although the Monte Carlo Edition is not a true performance version, it demonstrates how Renault uses design to highlight its history. Perhaps in the future, we will see more powerful variants that fully recreate the spirit of the legendary models of the past.
