Toyota GR Corolla Burned on the Track Due to Engine Overheating
Although track days are considered safer than regular races, they can still lead to serious accidents. The owner of the GR Corolla learned from personal experience how quickly a car can turn into a burned-out shell, leaving the driver without expensive transportation.
Footage from the helmet camera shows the driver successfully navigating several turns, but before a right-hand bend, the rear of the car unexpectedly slides out. The GR Corolla flies off the track and crashes into a tire barrier. After the airbags deploy, a fire starts, which was only extinguished thanks to the quick reaction of the marshals.
Technical Causes of the Accident
The incident occurred at the end of the first session when the engine oil was already hot. The 300-horsepower three-cylinder engine likely ejected oil onto the track, where it got onto the rear wheels, causing a skid. The hot oil in the engine bay instantly ignited, destroying the car.
The driver admits he is still learning how to properly prepare for track days and monitor the car’s condition during driving. While from the outside it might seem that he could have noticed the drop in oil pressure and reduced the load, in the heat of the moment, while chasing a Porsche 911, such things often go unnoticed.
Despite the severe consequences, the driver has not lost his enthusiasm for track driving. His positive attitude and willingness to continue improving his skills are commendable. This case is yet another reminder of how important it is to adhere to safety techniques and carefully monitor the car’s condition during extreme loads. Experienced track day participants recommend always having special insurance and regularly checking the car’s critical systems before heading out on the track.
