Electric vehicles and classics: a combination of styles
Electric vehicles make daily driving simpler and more comfortable, offering silence, smoothness, and the absence of noises characteristic of internal combustion engines. As everyday transport, they may seem more modern compared to traditional fuel-powered cars.
Enthusiasts and the soul of the car
However, there is a reason why car enthusiasts still appreciate engines – they give the car character, especially in retro models like the BMW 2002. The question arises: would you want to drive an electric version of a 1972 BMW?
Conversion to electric
This car, finished in Golf Yellow, now known as the 2002te, received new life thanks to the company Bavarian Econs Tech from Munich. The conversion involved complete replacement of the original engine and transmission with a 33 kWh battery pack from the BMW i3.
Engine and performance
Energy from the battery powers an electric motor taken from a Tesla Model S, which delivers 178 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. The system operates at 400 volts.
Lightness and speed
According to the seller, the car can travel up to 124 miles on a single charge and accelerate to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds, exceeding the needs of most drivers. The weight is only 2400 pounds, making it maneuverable and fun to drive.
Differences from traditional cars
However, apart from the absence of an engine and associated noises and vibrations, the car has no gearbox, so the driver won’t be able to enjoy the process of shifting gears.
Condition and updates
A representative of Bavarian Econs Tech noted that the BMW 2002 arrived at the workshop with only 31,000 km on the odometer and no signs of rust. The exterior paint remained original, as did most of the interior.
Modern amenities
Upgrades include new bucket seats, updated floor mats, and a modernized air conditioning system. For comfort, an audio system with Bluetooth, eight Helix speakers, and a subwoofer has been installed.
Exterior and chassis
The car is complemented by 13-inch Alpina wheels with Michelin XDX-B tires, as well as adjustable KW Racing V3 Classic shock absorbers. All important bushings have been replaced with polyurethane ones from Powerflex.
Purchase opportunity
For those who appreciate the combination of classic and electric, this car is available on the Bring a Trailer auction.
The conversion of classic cars to electric versions is becoming increasingly popular, as it allows preserving historical design while making them more environmentally friendly and modern. This approach may attract a new generation of enthusiasts who appreciate technology but don’t want to give up the unique style of past decades. However, it’s important to consider that some purists may view this as interference with authenticity, so such projects will remain subjects of debate.
