This Miniature Toyota Off-Roader Could Be the Most Charming Retro Car with Modern Internals

Key Features of the Model

Idea and Concept

For retro car enthusiasts looking for something more compact than the Mitsuoka Buddy based on the RAV4, Cal’s Motors offers an interesting solution, currently available only in Japan. The Havana is based on the Toyota Raize — a small crossover derived from the Daihatsu Rocky — and takes on the appearance of a scaled-down copy of a classic American off-roader, although the resemblance may vary somewhat depending on the viewing angle.

History and the New Fruity Pop

This model has been part of the Cal’s Motors lineup for several years, alongside similar modifications based on the Suzuki Jimny, Toyota HiAce, and Nissan NV200. Now the Havana is presented in a new special version called “Fruity Pop.” As the name implies, the main focus is on a bright color palette. Buyers can choose between Lemon Sugar, Cacao Whip, Lime Fizz, Peach Bubble, and Orange Sorbet. Each color is combined with a white roof and pillars, as well as retro Moon Chrome wheels.

Design and Exterior

The rest of the design is inherited from the regular Havana. The rework includes unique front and rear sections for the Toyota Raize, Daihatsu Rocky, and Subaru Rex, making them almost unrecognizable. The redesigned front end has become more angular, with rectangular LED headlights and numerous chrome elements on the grille and bumper, reminiscent of 1970s American style. Although the profile has remained almost unchanged, the rear end mirrors the front-end styling with new taillights, an updated tailgate, and a chrome bumper.

Interior and Additional Options

Cal’s Motors offers a range of interior upgrades to match the Havana’s exterior appearance. Options include leatherette seats, branded floor mats, and a new steering wheel badge. For tech enthusiasts, equipment from Alpine is available, including a 7-inch multimedia system touchscreen, upgraded speakers, and a digital rearview mirror.

Technical Specifications and Prices

Under the hood, the standard Toyota Raize powertrains remain: a naturally aspirated 1.2-liter engine (front-wheel drive), a turbocharged 1.0-liter engine (all-wheel drive), or a hybrid setup (front-wheel drive). The price starts from 4,863,000 yen (approximately $31,800) for the front-wheel-drive gasoline version, or 5,163,000 yen ($33,800) for all-wheel-drive and hybrid models. Buyers can also personalize their Havana with accessories such as a roof rack, Woodgrain decor, and various alloy wheels.

The emergence of special versions like the Havana Fruity Pop highlights the growing demand for personalization in the automotive industry, especially in markets where customers value uniqueness and style. The use of bright colors and retro elements can attract a younger audience while maintaining the technical reliability of the original platform. It also demonstrates how small ateliers can compete with large manufacturers by offering creative solutions that combine modern technology with nostalgic design.
