The 1967-1968 Ford Mustang is considered an iconic car, but this particular specimen stands out even among others. It was reworked by masters of the Italian atelier Zagato, known for their bold and sometimes controversial decisions. Although most of the body remained untouched, the front end underwent serious changes that may seem unusual to the modern viewer.
The main feature of the redesign is the replacement of round headlights with rectangular ones, as well as an elongated hood with a massive air intake.
History and Details
The car belonged to a European owner who used it until the 1980s, after which it was in long-term storage. After restoration, the Mustang participated in prestigious events, including the Mille Miglia. It can now be purchased through the Bring a Trailer auction.
This Mustang is not just a retro car, but a unique specimen that tells the story of collaboration between the American auto industry and Italian designers. Its style is reminiscent of some European models, such as the Citroen Ami 8 or Peugeot 504, although they appeared later. Interestingly, the front-end design bears a resemblance to the Ford Mach 1 concept presented in 1966.
The car’s interior is almost unchanged, except for the white leather seats with black inserts. The engine and transmission have remained original, making this specimen even more valuable for collectors. This is one of only two Mustangs ever modified by Zagato—the second was based on a GT 350.
The auction attracts attention not only from Mustang enthusiasts but also from those interested in unusual automotive projects. Although the design may be controversial, this car remains an important part of the history of American muscle cars and European design.
