Stunning 1968 Ford Mustang Restomod Up for Auction
An incredible 1968 Ford Mustang restomod, which combines classic muscle car aesthetics with modern power, has been listed for auction in the USA. This car may not have the technological sophistication of the modern Ford Mustang GTD, but in many aspects, it doesn’t need it.
This classic Ford offers greater performance, even more carbon fiber in its construction, and perhaps even more charisma. It’s the type of restomod that convincingly proves the advantages of the old approach, enhanced with serious upgrades.
The car was built by Classic Recreations under the GT500CR package. It features a lightweight carbon fiber body from SpeedKore Performance and largely mimics the look of the original “Eleanor,” with a “Pepper Gray” paint job and racing stripes that expose the carbon weave structure.
Supercharged Power and Analog Experience
Under the hood of this classic machine lies a monstrous supercharged 427-cubic inch (7.9-liter) V8 engine producing 900 horsepower. This power is sent to a nine-inch rear end. For comparison, the Mustang GTD is limited to 815 horsepower and is sold exclusively with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
This 1968 version, on the contrary, adheres to a more analog experience with a 6-speed manual Tremec transmission. It is mechanical, direct, and undeniably old-school.
Beneath the skin of this Ford, many more upgrades are hidden. The car has received modern rack-and-pinion steering, aftermarket shocks, and new front and rear sway bars. It also sits on 18-inch Forgeline wheels, shod with Michelin Pilot Sport tires sized 225/40 in the front and 315/30 in the rear.
Braking power is provided by red Wilwood calipers paired with drilled and slotted brake rotors, giving the car stopping performance worthy of the power under the hood.
Cost Question and Auction
According to the description on Bring a Trailer, the car has only traveled 418 miles (673 km) since its transformation. Classic Recreations itself recently avoided financial collapse, but despite a difficult period, its cars remain highly regarded and priced accordingly.
A new GT500CR with the available 900 hp V8 engine costs a staggering $699,900. And that’s before any additional options.
It’s impossible to predict for what amount this particular example will sell, but we would be surprised if it came close to the recommended price, especially since last year a less powerful version sold for $290,500, even though a new one cost over $574,000.
This auction lot clearly demonstrates how profound the transformation of a classic car can be. Despite the astronomical starting price of new Classic Recreations restomods, the market for used examples shows significant price volatility. This indicates that the value of such projects is determined not only by construction costs but also by uniqueness, history, and the emotional response they evoke in collectors. Bidders will likely evaluate not only the technical specifications but also the rare opportunity to own a car that combines legendary design with power surpassing many modern supercars.
