This unassuming Datsun 1200 pickup hides a turbocharged Nissan engine

Repco turned an old Datsun 1200 into a modern restomod

The Australian company Repco, known for its auto parts, has undertaken an unusual project. They transformed an old Datsun 1200 pickup into a stylish restomod, which became the star of their advertising campaign. This car embodies the DIY spirit, as it was restored in-house, pouring soul into every detail.

Exterior and interior

On the outside, the pickup received a new paint job — dark grey metallic with a high gloss. It is complemented by a black radiator grille, a front spoiler, wing mirrors, and a hard tonneau cover with the Datsun emblem. The car sits on 15-inch black wheels with deep lips and polished edges.

The interior also underwent radical changes. It features Recaro sports seats with diamond stitching in faux leather and suede. The same material is used for the door trim. The old analogue gauges have been replaced by a digital Haltech IC7 display, and the steering wheel has been swapped for a Sparco sports unit.

Technical changes under the hood

The most important changes are hidden from view. The old 1.2-litre engine has been replaced with a turbocharged 1.8-litre twin-cam from Nissan. This is complemented by a reinforced clutch, a new intercooler, an upgraded radiator, a modern Haltech engine control unit, and an exhaust system from Kamikaze Customs.

The chassis has also been updated: adjustable coilovers up front, new ball joints, refurbished bushings, and a lowered ride height. The braking system now features front discs with red calipers.

How to get this car?

Repco does not plan to keep this pickup. They are raffling it off among customers. Anyone who spends 100 Australian dollars (about 72 US dollars) on the company’s products before June 2026 is automatically entered to win this unique vehicle.

Mitch Wiley, Executive General Manager of Marketing at Repco, said: “The Repco Datto Resto project turned an old TV hero into a real star. Its journey reflects the same path that many of our customers and employees take with their own car projects.”

History of the Datsun 1200

The Datsun 1200 pickup first appeared in 1971. It was based on the second generation of the Nissan Sunny, which competed with the Toyota Corolla. In Japan, the model was produced until 1994, and in South Africa, the ‘Bakkie’ version lasted until 2008. Thanks to its light weight and rear-wheel drive, this car became a favourite among tuners.

Below, you can see the creation process of the Repco Datto Resto in four episodes.

This project demonstrates how even an old and unassuming car can be given a new life thanks to modern technology and enthusiasm. It also highlights the importance of the DIY community, where anyone can create something unique. The Datsun 1200 restomod is not just a car; it is a symbol that even an ordinary pickup can become a true work of art if you put time, effort, and a love for automobiles into it.
