This record-breaking hypercar was intentionally slowed down, but it still won

New record at Laguna Seca

The Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg has once again set a record on the Laguna Seca track. This is not the first time the company has achieved such success: in 2024, it became the record holder twice, but then lost the lead, conceding to the Czinger 21C model by just 0.11 seconds. Now Koenigsegg has reclaimed the title, surpassing the previous result by more than half a second and even overtaking some racing cars. What is even more impressive is that this result was achieved under significant limitations.

Compromises during the record attempt

The record-breaking car was the Sadair’s Spear, which is equipped with a twin-turbo V8 engine producing 1300 horsepower. This model is specifically designed for setting track records: it is lighter than the Jesko and has improved aerodynamics for better downforce. However, during the attempt at Laguna Seca, Koenigsegg faced serious obstacles. The track is known for its strict noise level limits, established at the initiative of local residents. On the day of the record, the permitted noise level could not exceed 90 dB, while the Sadair’s Spear produces significantly more noise. To meet the requirements, the team installed a massive additional muffler on the car.

This muffler not only added extra weight but also created a pendulum effect due to its location behind the body.

Technical features and results

In addition to the noise restrictions, the car had only one set of aluminum wheels, whereas customer versions are equipped with lighter carbon wheels. This increased the unsprung mass, which could have affected the dynamics. Despite this, the Sadair’s Spear posted a time of 1:24.16, which was officially confirmed by Racelogic. For comparison, the McMurtry Spéirling set a time of 1:18.413, but this model is not a production car, so Koenigsegg’s record is recognized as official. Furthermore, the Sadair’s Spear outperformed models such as the Huracan EVO GT3 and the Nissan 350Z hybrid.

Summary and prospects

While competitors such as Czinger and McMurtry use innovative technologies to achieve high results, Koenigsegg has proven that power and reliability can also be the key to success. The company notes that customer versions of the Sadair’s Spear, free from restrictions, will be even faster. This opens up new horizons for future records, especially on tracks with less stringent requirements. It is also important to consider that such achievements stimulate the development of the automotive industry, particularly in the fields of aerodynamics and weight reduction, which could find application in mass production.
