This Retro Trans Am Has a Corvette Engine Under the Hood and a Bunch of Problems

For fans of American muscle cars that combine retro style with modern technology, this restomod Trans Am is the perfect option. It has retained the legendary design, received an updated technical part, and is now ready for daily use, not just for storage in a garage.

The Trans Am is one of the most recognizable American sports cars, so its popularity is not surprising. Since these models are already almost 50 years old, they are great for restomodding, like this specimen. This week in Indianapolis, it will be put up for auction, and for the right price, it can become yours.

The car underwent a two-year restoration at Second Gen Engineering (USA) and is now completely road-ready. The modern powertrain, the latest technologies, and the original design make this Trans Am unique, incomparable to modern muscle cars.

During the restoration, the body was completely disassembled down to the floor pan, which was then painted in red oxide. The original subframe structure was reinforced with welds, new suspension components were installed, including Viking Performance shock absorbers at the front and adjustable struts at the rear. An adjustable stabilizer bar was also added.

The standard engine was replaced with a 6.2-liter LT1 producing 460 hp with stainless steel headers and a new 3-inch exhaust system. The torque is transmitted by a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission.

The interior was modernized wisely, avoiding excessive digitization. The original instrument panel was restored, new seats and door panels were added, as well as an Alpine audio system with a powerful subwoofer.

Auction Start

After the restoration, the car has only traveled 2,500 miles. This week it will be sold at the Mecum auction in Indianapolis. The expected price is up to $160,000. For this level of restoration, this is a justified amount, especially if you want to get a car with the iconic “screaming chicken” on the hood.
