A car has appeared on the market that could confuse even a connoisseur of British sports cars. This is a 2016 Healy Enigma, which strikingly accurately recreates the image of the legendary Austin-Healey 3000. However, it is not a product of a revived brand, but a modern tribute to the classic from the now-defunct British atelier Healy Designs.
Technical Basis and Design
This roadster is built on the platform of the third-generation Mazda MX-5 (NC). Its body is made of fiberglass and almost photographically copies the features of the Austin-Healey 3000: the oval radiator grille, the hood with air intakes, and the characteristic side vents. To create the car, ready-made components from other cars were used: the headlights are taken from the first-generation Mini Cooper S, and the rear lights are from the Nissan Micra.
The interior mostly remained from the donor Mazda but received British charm thanks to black quilted leather and a steering wheel with the Enigma emblem.
The Heart and Soul of the Car
Under the hood of this particular example is a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine from Mazda, producing 158 horsepower. However, Healy Designs also offered a much more radical option—a 4.0-liter V8 from Lexus, which would undoubtedly have sharply increased the car’s cost and dynamics.
We’re not entirely sure that a roadster based on a Miata needs that much power.
History of This Specific Example
This specific Healy Enigma, which was put up for auction, has less than 15,000 miles on the odometer and has already had four owners. The car even appeared on television, playing a role in the British soap opera “Emmerdale” in 2019. At the time of writing the original news, the auction was still ongoing, with the highest bid reaching 13 thousand pounds sterling.
Attempts to Revive the Legend
The Austin-Healey brand, founded in 1952, ceased car production in 1972, but its legacy has inspired engineers more than once. The Healy Enigma is just one in a series of attempts to bring the legend back. Previously, projects based on the BMW Z8 and MG XPower SV appeared, and in 2006 another prototype was presented. The Healy Designs company itself ceased to exist in 2023. In parallel, other workshops, such as Caton, are taking the path of creating luxury restomods of original Austin-Healeys at a very high price.
The appearance of cars like the Healy Enigma vividly illustrates the constant demand for classic aesthetics combined with modern reliability. They fill the niche between original collector cars, which require constant care, and modern mass-produced sports models. This specific auction lot is an interesting artifact not only of automotive engineering but also of small British businesses that tried to realize the dreams of enthusiasts. Its fate at auction may become an indicator of how much the market values such niche, semi-handmade, but soulful projects in the era of globalized mass production.
