Powerful VW Bus Restomod with a V8 Engine
The classic VW Bus has always been famous for its practicality—simplicity of construction, spaciousness, and affordable price. However, its weak air-cooled engine was a significant drawback. In the case of the Rocketbox, this problem is radically solved—instead of the standard engine, a powerful 509 cubic inch V8 is installed.
This restomod retained the classic Type II appearance but received modern technical components. The engine produces about 560 horsepower, which is ten times the performance of the original. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 3-speed automatic transmission. The chassis is made of a tubular structure, and the wheels have different diameters—17 and 18 inches.
Master’s Work
Bodo Reichert built this car for over ten years before passing away from cancer. He widened the rear fenders by 15 cm for better engine cooling and routed the exhaust pipes through the roof pillars. Interestingly, the car was not originally a 21-window microbus from the factory—it acquired this look as a result of the restoration.
The interior is impressive with its finishes: seats from a Porsche 914, a wooden steering wheel, handcrafted consoles, and modified instruments. The odometer shows only 7,194 miles. Previously, this example was offered for $80,000—about the same as a new ID. Buzz, but for admirers of automotive artistry, the choice will likely be in favor of the Rocketbox.
This project demonstrates how classic design can be combined with modern technology. Unlike the original VW Bus, which was affordable family transport, the Rocketbox has become a unique collector’s item. Its appearance at the auction will undoubtedly cause a stir among lovers of automotive exclusivity.
