Amazing concept cars that are better left on paper
Concept cars often impress with their originality, but some of them look so strange that we can only thank the manufacturers for never bringing them to mass production. Readers chose the most extravagant models that exceeded all expectations—from luxury cars with unusual designs to powerful pickups with engines from Formula 1.
Chrysler Atlantic: a failed attempt to create a masterpiece
One such example was the 1995 Chrysler Atlantic. The car was supposed to be a symbol of elegance, but instead, it resembled props from a 90s sci-fi movie. Its design tried to combine classic features with modern trends, but the result was something very awkward. As one commentator noted:
“Hispano Suiza should have taken a cue from Chrysler and not created its own version of this car.”
Isuzu Como F1 Super Truck: an experiment with a V12
Another interesting but questionable project was the 1991 Isuzu Como F1 Super Truck. It was a pickup with two doors and a V12 engine designed for Formula 1 racing. While the idea sounds incredible, the design turned out to be too extreme even by the standards of the time.
Other unusual concepts
Among other options were the Isuzu Zen, which resembled a vehicle from a futuristic movie, and the BMW Fun Car, created by students as a hybrid of a motorcycle and a car. But the most discussed was the Rolls-Royce 103EX—a concept that represented the brand’s vision of the future 100 years ahead. It had unusual doors, no steering wheel, and a design that sparked polarizing opinions.
Although these concepts never became reality, they show just how bold automakers can be in their search for new ideas. Perhaps it is such experiments that help find the solutions that will later become standards in the automotive world.
