The Price of This 1111-Horsepower Lucid Air Electric Car Exceeds the Cost of an Average House in Pennsylvania by More Than a Third

Luxury Electric Cars and Their Rapid Depreciation

The market for premium electric cars in recent years has been characterized by an impressive rate of value loss, which is particularly noticeable in the segment of the most expensive models. The story of one specific Lucid Air clearly demonstrates the scale of this phenomenon.

Flagship Model with Over a Thousand Horsepower

This car is the flagship version of the all-electric sedan. Except for the most powerful Sapphire, it is the most performance-oriented modification of the Air ever offered to buyers. Its engine produces an incredible 1111 horsepower and 1390 Nm of torque.

The Lucid owner received a $50,000 lesson in depreciation.

As the price tag shows, the first owner paid $170,500 for the car. Considering the performance, elegant body design, and luxurious interior, this amount seemed justified. However, after four years of use and 22,000 miles, the car’s value plummeted. It was recently sold at auction for just $67,067.

Six-Figure Value Loss and Its Scale

As a result, an impressive $103,433 was written off the car’s price. If this amount is distributed over the mileage, it turns out that for every mile driven, the value was lost by almost $5.

To understand the scale: such an amount could cover a significant part of the cost of a house in many US states. For example, the median home price in Alabama is about $282,400, in Arkansas — $255,300, in Illinois — $285,600. The money lost on the depreciation of this single car equals more than a third of the cost of a typical house in these regions.

The Bright Side: Accessibility of a High-Tech Car

While undoubtedly unpleasant for the first owner, on the other hand, such a situation makes an excellent car more accessible to new buyers. According to the lot description, the sedan was meticulously maintained for four years, with some parts replaced and all necessary service campaigns performed.

The car is not only quick off the line but also has a long range. Thanks to a 118 kWh battery, in the configuration with 21-inch wheels like this one, it can travel up to 451 miles on a single charge.

Luxury and Comfort of the Interior

Often compared to the Tesla Model S, the Lucid Air offers a more luxurious and better-equipped interior. Key features of this model include: Nappa leather upholstery, front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage function, a 34-inch display combining the media system and instruments, and a 21-speaker audio system. This particular car also features the Santa Monica interior trim, which combines dark blue and light cream leather.

The bad news for the first owner turned out to be great for the next one. A logical question arises: would you buy a used Lucid Air, knowing how quickly these cars lose value?

Similar stories are becoming increasingly typical for the premium electric vehicle segment, which may indicate the dynamic formation of the used EV market. On one hand, this is a serious blow to the concept of a car as an investment, especially for early technology adopters. On the other hand, an interesting phenomenon is created: technologically advanced, powerful, and comfortable cars become accessible to a much wider range of car enthusiasts just a few years after their release. This could accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles in general, as the buyer gets “hardware” with future technologies at a relatively moderate price, compensating for the risk of further depreciation with the already received emotions of driving.
