Honda Prelude Could Become One of the Brand’s Most Expensive Models
After years of rumors, Honda is finally preparing for the return of the Prelude in September 2025. One of the main questions is the price of the new hybrid coupe. Although official data is not yet available, a leak from Japan suggests that the car could become one of the most expensive in the Honda lineup on the domestic market.
According to sources, the base version of the Prelude will cost around ¥6,179,800 (approximately $41,000). For comparison, the Civic Type R in Japan is estimated at ¥4,997,300–5,998,300, making the Prelude significantly more expensive. Even the limited ON Limited Edition with additional options has a price of ¥6,540,000 ($43,400).
Comparison with Other Sports Coupes
Interestingly, the Prelude turns out to be more expensive than models like the Nissan Z with a turbocharged V6 (from ¥5,497,800) and the Toyota GR Supra (from ¥4,995,000). This raises questions about Honda’s market positioning, as the Prelude is not a classic sports car, but rather a hybrid coupe with an emphasis on comfort and technology.
Technical Features and Debut
The Prelude will receive an updated e:HEV hybrid system with a 2.0-liter engine and two electric motors. Key features include adaptive suspension, Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels, and a premium interior with digital displays and heated seats. Production is limited to 2000 units, and orders in Japan will start being accepted from September 5th.
For the American market, prices may differ due to various factors, including the place of production. If we rely on Japanese data, the cost could exceed $40,000, making the Prelude significantly more expensive than the Civic Hybrid. Final figures will depend on Honda’s strategy in each market.
The return of the Prelude is a bold move by Honda, which could either find its niche among fans of premium coupes or prove too ambitious for the mass buyer. The limited production run and high price indicate that the brand is betting on exclusivity, not mass appeal. Whether such a strategy will justify itself will be shown by time and the market’s reaction after the start of sales.
