This Ferrari F50 Could Become the Most Expensive Ever Sold

Owning a piece of automotive history has never been cheap, but when it comes to a car with familiar Ferrari origins and the attached name of Ralph Lauren, one can expect the price to reach astronomical heights.

Ralph Lauren is one of the most famous and successful fashion designers in the world, but in automotive circles, he is equally known for one of the most impressive car collections on the planet. Now, a 1995 Ferrari once owned by him is going up for auction and could easily become one of the most expensive F50s ever sold publicly.

Ferrari produced only 349 examples of the F50, and of these, 55 were built to American standards. Lauren’s old car is one of these two American models, painted in Giallo Modena, and was delivered new to the fashion mogul. Typically, when Lauren purchased a car, he kept it. However, in 2003, he parted ways with this F50, and since then, the car has been owned by a second owner.

RM Sotheby’s predicts that this F50 could sell for between $6.5 million and $7.5 million. Even if the car changes hands at the lower estimate of $6.5 million, it would be $1 million more expensive than the previous most expensive F50 ever sold at auction, which went for $5,532,500 in February. That car had 1,351 miles (2,174 km) on it. Lauren’s old F50 has traveled just under 5,400 miles (~8,690 km).

The Giallo Modena F50 was displayed at several events in the 2000s but hasn’t been shown publicly since 2009, when it was brought to the Celebration Exotic Car Festival in Central Florida. It was last serviced in the past year and had a new fuel tank installed.

There was a time when the F50 wasn’t viewed with the same reverence as the Enzo, but things have changed in recent years. Partly thanks to its Formula 1-derived V12 engine and its incredible rarity, it is now considered one of Ferrari’s greatest road cars. This is reflected in the valuations of lower-mileage examples. Ten years ago, it was possible to buy an F50 for less than $1.5 million. Now, they trade for over $5 million.
