This Mazda RX7 Tried to Imitate Porsche and Paid the Price for It

History and Modernity of the Mazda RX-7

At the end of 1991, Mazda introduced the third-generation FD RX-7 — a car that came with smooth lines that tend to outlive fashion trends. More than three decades later, this shape still attracts just as much attention, and collectors have noticed, as recent auctions remind us.

Auction Failure

However, not every RX-7 causes a frenzy among buyers. This particular specimen, recently offered at an online auction, found no buyer, perhaps because it doesn’t quite resemble the standard car revered by enthusiasts.

Modification Details

Listed for sale in Australia, this RX-7 is equipped with an RE-Amemiya AC987 body kit. This kit is so extensive that many car enthusiasts probably wouldn’t even recognize it as an RX-7.

Radical Changes

At the front, the familiar “bug-eye” headlights are gone, replaced by headlights modeled after the Porsche 911. A special front bumper and a hood with ventilation holes are also present, changing the car’s face and improving engine bay ventilation.

The rearview mirrors have also been moved from the doors to the front fenders in a classic JDM style. Other key elements of the kit include special side skirts and rocker panels, rear fenders, a fixed rear spoiler, and a distinctive rear end with a new bumper and lights.

The result is undoubtedly expressive. But whether it’s a visual improvement or too radical a departure from the RX-7’s original character depends on the viewer’s perspective. In any case, it can hardly be mistaken for a production model.

Car Features

The Collecting Cars listing states that the Mazda sits on 17-inch wheels, and the dashboard is signed by Keiichi Tsuchiya, known as the “Drift King.”

Interestingly, the powertrain is believed to have remained untouched, meaning the 1.3-liter rotary engine is the same as from the factory. Thanks to sequential twin turbos, the FD RX-7 produces 252 hp, making it very fun to drive.

Despite its technical integrity and uniqueness, this RX-7 did not find a new owner, which may indicate collectors’ conservatism regarding exterior changes. Modifications that radically alter the design often cause controversy among purists who prefer the original look. However, for tuning fans and exclusive solutions, such a car remains an interesting example of a creative approach to a Japanese sports car.
