Start of Development of the New Generation Toyota Harrier
Toyota has begun work on the next generation of the Harrier model. There are suggestions that the car could transform into a crossover-coupe. The new model is expected to appear in 2027 with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.
Connection with Other Models and Markets
Although the Toyota Harrier name might not be very familiar, you have undoubtedly heard of the Venza. This crossover is also closely related to a number of Lexus models, which is why it’s interesting that spy photographers recently captured a prototype of the next generation.
The fifth-generation Harrier, expected in 2027, promises to be larger and more luxurious than its predecessor. There is even speculation that it could transform into a crossover-coupe and return to the American market, likely under the Venza name.
This is an interesting idea because it will help distinguish the model from the RAV4 and Crown Signia. Being a crossover-coupe will also strengthen its premium positioning.
Exterior Appearance and Features
Unfortunately, little can be seen for now, aside from some camouflage and unusual door handles. It is clear that the production model will look completely different.
Technical Specifications and Platform
Details are still limited, but the updated crossover is expected to use the familiar TNGA-K platform and receive a wheelbase increased by 2.4 inches (60 mm). This will give the model 108.3 inches (2750 mm) between the wheels, which is 3.9 inches (99 mm) less than the Crown Signia.
The length is expected to grow to 187.4 inches (4760 mm), and the width will increase slightly – by 0.2 inches (5 mm). More noticeably, the model could be 4.3 inches (110 mm) lower than its predecessor.
Interior and Multimedia System
We treat these figures with a degree of skepticism, but the Harrier’s interior may borrow some features from the RAV4. This means we can expect an updated Toyota Audio Multimedia system with a more smartphone-like interface. The 12.9-inch display should also offer customizable widgets and improved response times.
Although the display is expected to remain, the rest of the interior will be much more refined. This is not surprising at all, as the previous Venza felt more like a Lexus than a Toyota.
Powertrains
Powertrain details also remain unclear, but there are rumors that the model could use a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It is expected to be paired with hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems to provide performance and efficiency.
The shift to a coupe-like design could be a key step for differentiating the Harrier in the crowded crossover market. The increased dimensions and potential reduction in height point to an ambition to create a more sporty and elegant image, aligning with the overall trend towards more dynamic forms in the SUV segment. The use of advanced hybrid technologies underscores the growing importance of sustainability without compromising performance, especially for markets where emission standards are becoming increasingly stringent.
