Daihatsu Organizes Farewell Ceremony for Copen Model Before Its Discontinuation

End of Production and Future Plans

Production of the compact roadster Daihatsu Copen will be discontinued in August 2026, concluding the history of one of the most distinctive Japanese kei cars. However, the company has already hinted at developing a new generation that may differ in market positioning.

Historical Path of the Model

The first Copen appeared in 2002 with a compact two-door roadster body and an electrically folding hardtop – a first in the kei car segment. Production ceased in 2012, leaving a two-year gap before the launch of the second generation in 2014. This version had sharper body lines and modular panels while maintaining kei car proportions. The most interesting modification was the Copen GR Sport, which appeared in 2019 with chassis and exterior updates.

Farewell Events and Prospects

Daihatsu will not let the Copen simply disappear. In April 2026, the company will hold a special farewell event across Japan dedicated to loyal customers and communities associated with this car.

Concept of the Future

More importantly, the company confirmed research into the future of the Copen. Although the implementation timeline is uncertain, the Vision Copen concept, presented at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023, provides a glimpse of what to expect.

The concept looks like a modern interpretation of the original Copen with round headlights and clean surfaces. However, it has significantly larger dimensions – length 3835 mm, indicating the possibility of avoiding kei car segment restrictions and creating a worthy competitor for the next Mazda MX-5.

Another interesting detail: the concept is equipped with a 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine running on carbon-neutral fuel. This will provide more power compared to the tiny 658cc unit of previous generations – rumored to be at least 150 hp. Additionally, there are unconfirmed reports about a Suzuki Cappuccino roadster and a compact Toyota SF-R sports car that may share a platform.

Official Manufacturer Statement

At the end of August 2026, production of the current Copen model will be discontinued. The appeal of a small open sports car must be connected to the future. For the Copen to remain the Copen. This is a proactive choice.
So that we can release the Copen to the world again, we are now making various preparations and considerations. Although the current model is coming to an end, the challenge continues.

However, since its launch in 2002, it has been loved by everyone. For the Copen that ran alongside us, this is also a major milestone. Therefore, in a place where I can meet all of you personally, we decided to hold an event that brings together people who love the Copen.

The target time is around spring 2026. All participants will be able to enjoy the Copen. I think it will be a special place where we can connect our hearts. Because we also love the Copen. Because we want to ensure that this production ending connects to the future. This small car is filled with great romance.
Because I sincerely believe it. (This car is so cute, there’s nothing like it.)

For the Copen, this milestone. We hope to share our love for the Copen with all of you. I hope this will be a good opportunity. I look forward to our meeting.

The discontinuation of the current Copen model does not mean the end of the brand in the sports car segment. Transitioning to larger sizes and more powerful engines could open new market opportunities for Daihatsu, allowing it to compete with established models like the Mazda MX-5. Social reaction to farewell events and demand for future models will show whether the company can preserve the unique character of the Copen in a new iteration adapted to modern safety requirements and environmental standards.
