Denza Z: Power up to 1582 hp, but weight like a BMW X5

Denza Z: A sports electric vehicle with incredible power

Power and technical specifications

At the end of April, BYD’s premium brand, Denza, unveiled the long-awaited sports car Z. It was initially shown as a convertible, but it was immediately confirmed that coupe versions would also be available. Six weeks have passed, and now new photos of these coupes have emerged, along with important technical specifications for the Z lineup.

The most important aspect of the Denza Z is its impressive performance. Data published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology indicates that the Z will be offered with two powertrain options, both featuring three electric motors.

Base versions will use a 268 hp (200 kW) motor on the front axle and a pair of 215 hp (160 kW) motors on the rear, totaling 482 hp (360 kW). This is almost equal to the MG Cyberster’s output (502 hp). For those seeking more power, Denza will also sell the Z with a front motor producing 670 hp (500 kW) and two motors producing 456 hp (340 kW) each on the rear wheels, for a total of 1582 hp (1180 kW). This is more than the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, which has 1526 hp.

Speed and dynamics

It is not yet known how quickly the different versions of the Denza Z will accelerate, but the standard coupe and convertible will be able to reach 300 km/h, while the flagship coupe will accelerate to 350 km/h.

Aggressive design of the top version

While the standard coupe looks almost identical to the convertible shown at the Beijing Auto Show, albeit with a fixed roof, the top coupe looks much more aggressive. This is the car that was spotted during tests at the Nürburgring last year.

This model is equipped with a more advanced aerodynamic package, including an updated front bumper and splitter. It also features special alloy wheels, a large rear wing, and a larger diffuser. The weight of the top version is 2240 kg. The base coupe is slightly lighter at 2220 kg, while the convertible, as expected, is the heaviest at 2290 kg.

Price and prospects

Prices for the three Denza Z models in China have not yet been announced, but they will almost certainly be significantly lower than any Western competitors.

Thus, the Denza Z is becoming a serious player in the high-performance electric vehicle market, offering incredible power and speed at a potentially more affordable price. The emergence of models like the Z demonstrates the rapid development of Chinese automotive engineering, which is already capable of challenging established global brands. It is particularly interesting that the company is betting on different body types — coupe and convertible, as well as a track version, allowing it to reach a wider audience of buyers. We must wait for official data on acceleration dynamics and cost to finally assess the competitiveness of this ambitious project.
