Some Ram pickup trucks accelerate faster than the factory intended

Ram 2500 recall due to exceeding tire speed ratings

Ram has announced a recall of nearly 13,000 pickup trucks of the 2500 model, produced between 2023 and 2026. The cause is a software error that allows the vehicles to reach speeds exceeding the permissible limits for the installed tires.

Although Ram is known for its powerful models, such as the 1500 TRX with a 777-horsepower engine, some versions have proven to be “too fast for their own good.” The recall affects 12,736 pickup trucks that may exceed the tire speed limit due to an error in the powertrain control module software.

The problem is that a software glitch allows the vehicles to travel faster than the tires’ specifications permit. This could compromise tire integrity and lead to “deterioration of vehicle handling,” increasing the risk of an accident.

Problem details and solution

Stellantis, Ram’s parent company, did not disclose many details about the issue but stated they are unaware of any incidents or owner complaints related to this defect. The manufacturer also hinted that the recall is limited to models equipped with certain tire types.

To resolve the issue, owners will need to take their pickup trucks to a dealership, where technicians will install updated software for the powertrain control module. This is a relatively simple fix, and owner notification letters are expected to be sent out early next month.

Context and additional information

This is not the first time Ram has faced technical issues. Previously, the company recalled 65,000 pickup trucks due to a glitch that disabled the instrument panel display. However, the current recall is unique because it is related to tire safety, which could have serious consequences for drivers and passengers.

It is worth noting that the Ram 2500 is a heavy-duty pickup truck often used for towing and hauling cargo. Exceeding the tire speed ratings could lead to tire failure, especially under heavy loads, creating an additional hazard on the road.

While the software update will fix the problem, it is important that owners do not ignore the recall notice. Even if the issue has not manifested before, the risk of losing vehicle control due to tire damage is real. This serves as a reminder that even the most powerful vehicles must meet safety standards, and manufacturers are obligated to respond quickly to such deficiencies.
