Diia Could Be the Source of Personal Data Leak of Ukrainians

Telegram bot UA Baza allegedly has data of millions of Ukrainians at its disposal. Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Information rejected reports that the source of the leak could be the Diia app.

What is known about the data

Telegram channel UA Baza Bot announced the sale of driver’s license data of Ukrainians.

“The telegram bot began operating, using large volumes of personal data. Immediately, fakes began to spread actively, linking this information to the work of the Diia app.

This is theoretically impossible,” emphasized Fedorov.

According to him, “Diia” does not have a database and does not accumulate such information.

The Ministry of Digital Information added that the bot’s creators announced a base of 26 million certificates, even though there are only 9.5 million driving licenses in Ukraine. Of these, 6.5 million are displayed in the app. “Secondly, the amount of information available in the specified bot is much, tens, or even hundreds of times greater than that handled by Diia. Thirdly, preliminary analysis of the bot’s information indicates the use of old databases which have been available on the darknet for several years.

In particular, it involves the database of PrivatBank (before nationalization) and other private (non-governmental) databases. For example, the bot provides access to passwords from VKontakte and LinkedIn,” Fedorov added.

How the issue is being resolved

The Security Service of Ukraine began investigative actions regarding the operation of the telegram bot and the personal data available in it.

Previously reported

  • Two bots appeared in the Telegram messenger that search for personal data of Ukrainian users by phone number for a fee.
  • It was reported that the bots presumably take data from a stolen client database of PrivatBank. The bank says this is impossible.
  • The prolonged quarantine forced companies to switch to remote work and citizens to actively master online services.

This created fertile ground for the flourishing of fraud.
