- The concept of Volvo 240R is an imaginative sports sedan and wagon.
- It combines the square shapes of the Volvo 200 series with new stylistic accents.
- The project was created by independent designer Jordan Rubinstein-Towler.
Polestar has come a long way since its inception as, transforming into a separate electric vehicle manufacturer. But with this change of direction comes the inevitable question: will future Volvo models get high-performance variants similar to BMW M department or Mercedes’ AMG line? Well, independent designer Jordan Rubinstein-Towler took to this idea with his creation, the 240R, which is a high-performance, retro-futuristic embodiment of his own Volvo 240 concept.
A hint of the past with enhancement
Staying true to the spirit of the original, Volvo 240R combines the unmatched square shape of the old 200 series with modern styling. The R version introduces a sporty body kit – think deeper bumpers, side skirts, a small spoiler, and a ducktail trunk lid. It’s like the 240 got a good workout but still managed to keep its classic individuality.

The drawings speak for themselves. Rubinstein-Towler’s design work achieves the perfect balance with black and colored accents on updated details, creating a classic yet modern look. To further emphasize the sporty aspect, the car rides on new black five-spoke alloy wheels as a nod to Volvo’s sports legacy.
In one of, the sedan poses next to a racing Volvo 240, which achieved great victories in the touring car championships of the ’80s. Also, the wagon is accompanied by the mid-’90s Volvo 850 R.
Modern interior, retro vibes
The 240R is not only about a fast exterior look – the interior was also worked on. Highlights include blue upholstery that adds a splash of color to retro-inspired bucket seats and a fresh steering wheel design. The updated digital cockpit uses a minimalist approach with a few smaller displays combined with physical buttons to maintain tactile feedback on the central console.
Power to match the appearance?
So, if this car ever makes it to production, what will be driving this modern interpretation of the classic “brick”? Since the modern reinterpretation of the Volvo 240 is, the (imaginary) 240R can also be expected to have an electric zero-emission drive.
A quick glance at Geely shows that a high-performance electric vehicle is within reach. For example, take the Twin Motor Performance version of the new Volvo ES90; it develops a combined output of 671 horsepower (680 hp / 500 kW). This is enough for a high-performance sedan and wagon.
Speaking of as a direct competitor to the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE. From Rubinstein-Towler’s visualizations, it appears that his 240R proposal could handle the lower tier of this model, potentially filling the void left by the rapidly phased-out S60/V60 models.

Such a proposal would compete against the forthcoming BMW Neue Klasse i3 and the electric Mercedes C-Class. BMW M has already hinted, while Mercedes is expected to release an AMG version sooner or later.
Hopefully, the designer team pays attention to innovative concepts from independent designers. Perhaps they will find a source of inspiration for future models – provided they are not too busy exploring how to make their crossovers even more common.
