Volkswagen May Bring Back a Compact Electric Minivan
Sources report that Volkswagen is considering the possibility of creating a new electric minivan based on previously presented concepts. The company believes that such a car, similar to the Touran, could be relevant in the modern market. If the project is approved, it could appear by the end of the decade.
Why Now?
Despite the popularity of SUVs, Volkswagen believes in the potential of minivans, especially for family buyers. One of the inspirations for the new car could be the Budd-e concept presented in 2016. It combines the classic microbus design with modern electric technologies.
Sources from Autocar report that Volkswagen recently reviewed old minivan concepts in the early stages of planning a new model range.
The new car could become a more affordable alternative to the electric ID. Buzz, aimed at families and taxi fleets. Although the project has not yet received final approval, it could be launched by 2028. The platform will depend on the release timeline — it could be the updated MEB or the future SSP.
Given Volkswagen’s plans to discontinue the Touran, the new model could inherit this name, but as a fully electric vehicle. This would be an interesting step for a company trying to combine tradition with innovation in the face of growing competition in the electric vehicle market.
