Stolen Dodge Durango: GPS tracker led police straight to the culprit
An incident in Crystal Lake serves as a reminder that stealing a car and disappearing without a trace has become much more difficult thanks to modern security systems and GPS tracking built into most new vehicles. A man from Monroe Center, Illinois, learned this lesson the hard way and will spend the next nine years behind bars.
How police tracked down the car thief
The trouble began on May 24, 2025, when the Crystal Lake Police received an alert regarding the location of a stolen 2025 Dodge Durango. The built-in GPS did most of the work, leading officers directly to the parking lot of a Best Buy in Crystal Lake, where they found the Durango with a woman in the passenger seat.
As officers waited by the Durango for the driver to return, Wayne Mikulski exited the store and headed towards the stolen SUV. He almost immediately noticed the police and attempted to flee on foot but did not get far. The 46-year-old man was apprehended after a struggle, during which, reportedly, three officers were injured.
Additional charges and criminal history
In addition to the stolen vehicle, police allege that Mikulski was in possession of several credit cards that did not belong to him, as well as a quantity of methamphetamine.
Not his first run-in with the law
Instead of risking a trial, Mikulski reached a plea agreement with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, pleading guilty to unlawful possession of a motor vehicle in exchange for the dismissal of lesser charges. Last week, he was sentenced to nine years in prison.
This sentence added to an already substantial criminal history. Mikulski is currently serving a sentence of over eight years for aggravated fleeing from police, forgery, and mail fraud, as well as separate terms for identity theft, another aggravated fleeing charge in Ogle County, and burglary in Cook County.
After the sentencing, McHenry County State’s Attorney Randy Friese noted that “modern technologies significantly increase the likelihood that offenders will be found, arrested, and prosecuted.” She also thanked the Crystal Lake Police and the Chicago Police for their coordinated efforts in locating the stolen vehicle and apprehending the suspect.
This case vividly demonstrates how technologies once considered a luxury are today becoming a powerful tool in the fight against auto theft. Built-in GPS monitoring systems not only help owners find their vehicles but also significantly complicate life for criminals, who often do not realize their location can be tracked in real-time. Furthermore, this story underscores that for repeat offenders with years of criminal experience, modern investigative methods and cooperation between different police units make attempts to evade punishment increasingly less successful.
