Modern Electric Version of the Classic Skoda 1000 MBX Coupe
Skoda designers have presented a digital concept that reinterprets the classic 1000 MBX coupe from the 1960s in a modern electric execution. This project continues the series of virtual reinterpretations of the brand’s historical models such as Felicia Fun, Favorit, and 110 R.
Inspiration and Concept Development
The new concept was created by Skoda designers Antti Mikael Savio (exterior) and David Stingl (interior). The development took about three to four weeks, starting from paper sketches and ending with a full 3D model.
The project was inspired by the classic 1000 MBX, which was introduced in 1966 as a two-door version of the 1000 MB sedan. Production of this model was limited to 2,517 units, making it a rare specimen today.
Exterior Design
The modern interpretation retains a similar body type but adds rear-hinged doors for convenient access to the 2+2 cabin, reminiscent of the Mazda RX-8 design. The designers avoided excessive retro style, focusing on details that correspond to the Modern Solid philosophy.
The front LED lighting repeats the chrome grille of the classic model, and the shape of the pillars and rear contours also refer to the past. A central fin with a camera replaces the traditional rear window, adding a futuristic look.
Antti Savio, responsible for exterior design, noted: “Our concept is generally sportier but retains a friendly appearance. Modern sports cars often look too aggressive, whereas models from the 1960s and 1970s had a certain elegance and charm — that’s exactly what I wanted to preserve.”
Interior and Practicality
The cabin has a 2+2 layout with a front bench seat, made possible by the flat floor of the electric vehicle, and two separate folding seats in the rear. The latter can be easily folded to create additional space for transporting a bicycle or sports equipment.
The dashboard is made in the form of a transparent oval, and the center console is absent, reminiscent of classic interior solutions.
Interior designer David Stingl said: “This car should encourage the crew to explore without hesitation. It shouldn’t be just a weekend car, but a vehicle for daily use.”
Electric Powertrain
Skoda does not disclose details about the electric drive, but the designers envision the concept with an adaptive air suspension that can adjust the ground clearance for sporty behavior or improved off-road capability.
Future of the Concept
Despite interest from brand fans, Skoda does not plan to launch this model into series production. The concepts of the “Icons Get a Makeover” series are created as creative tributes to the brand’s history, allowing designers to experiment without the constraints of mass production.
This concept demonstrates how traditions can be combined with innovations, offering a new perspective on the cars of the future. The use of an electric platform opens up additional possibilities for design, such as a flat floor and compact components, allowing for spacious and functional interiors. This approach could become the basis for future developments not only for Skoda but also for other manufacturers seeking to combine environmental friendliness with aesthetics.
