Scout Spirit of ’26 is a retro-styled return to the past

Scout unveiled the Traveler Spirit of ’26: a tribute to history

Scout quietly announced a new version of its Traveler SUV called the Spirit of ’26. This special edition commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States and pays homage to the legendary Spirit of ’76 package, which debuted 50 years ago. Production of the new model is planned to start in 2027, and work at the factory is ongoing.

The return of the Scout brand comes as if half a century later, so it is quite logical that the company decided to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with the release of the Traveler Spirit of ’26. The model was introduced almost without much fanfare but immediately attracted attention with its patriotic design in red, white, and blue colors.

Historical roots: how it all began

In 1976, when the Winter Olympic Games were held in Innsbruck, Austria, the U.S. Ski Team needed a reliable fleet of vehicles to transport athletes and their equipment. International Harvester responded to this request by providing ten Scout Travelers and seven Scout II Traveltops. Since the vehicles were intended for the U.S. Ski Team and 1976 was America’s bicentennial year, they were painted white with blue and red stripes.

Some vehicles also received team logos, ski racks, and winches. Technically, these SUVs were equipped with a V8 engine, automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The vehicles were a great success, so Scout decided to release a production version called the Spirit of ’76. It retained the distinctive paint scheme but lost the ski accessories. The package also included a Wedgwood Blue interior, a blue roll bar, and Rallye wheels with larger tires. Some versions even had a denim blue soft top.

Modern incarnation: Spirit of ’26

Fifty years later, Scout is trying to recreate that same magic with the Traveler Spirit of ’26. The model features a red, white, and blue livery, the graphics of which are inspired by the old Rallye packages. Although the new model does not have the same charm as the original, it features the Harvester graphic element. Since Scout does not yet have vehicles for sale, alongside the concept, the company released a line of retro merchandise: t-shirts for $36, coolers, and a jacket for $99.

Production status and plans

As for production, the last update on the Scout factory dates back to June. The facility is gradually taking shape: industrial air conditioners were recently installed in the body shop, equipment installation continues in the assembly building, access roads are being built, and work continues at supplier sites. The company is annoyed by constant questions about production start dates and possible delays; however, its website states that “initial production is planned for 2027, but is subject to change.”

Overall, Scout is trying to combine nostalgia for the 1970s with modern technology, but for now, it is more of an image-building move than an actual market entry. The lack of a big presentation and a limited range of products indicate that the company is in the preparation stage for serial production, but there are no specific dates yet. The Spirit of ’26 looks like an attempt to remind fans of its existence while the factory is still under construction, and this could be both a successful marketing move and a risky step if production is delayed.
